Background of the study
Examination malpractice has been a pervasive issue in educational systems worldwide, undermining the integrity of academic assessments and students' overall learning experience (Oluwaseun & Bello, 2024). In secondary schools, particularly in Ilorin West, Kwara State, the advent of information and communication technology (ICT) presents an opportunity to reduce malpractice during examinations. ICT-based solutions, such as digital proctoring systems, online exam platforms, and real-time monitoring technologies, are becoming increasingly popular in ensuring transparency, fairness, and security during examinations.
ICT tools help to monitor students’ behavior during exams, ensuring that cheating is minimized and academic integrity is maintained. In addition, these tools can also streamline the entire examination process, from setting up secure online exams to automated grading, reducing opportunities for human errors or manipulation. However, the adoption of ICT in examination settings comes with challenges such as the need for adequate infrastructure, digital literacy training for teachers, and resistance from students and staff. This study will analyze the role of ICT in reducing examination malpractice in secondary schools in Ilorin West, with a focus on its effectiveness in ensuring fairness and improving the overall examination experience.
